CLASSES

DIRECTORS CRAFT - An introduction to both artistic, philosophic, and history-based camera craft for filmmakers. Topics will include composition, staging, space, movement and design for camera, as well as basic editing, sound design, casting, and the fundamental elements of working with a crew and on a set. Directing Production Exercises geared towards the application of director-craft will be assigned and critiqued in class on a weekly basis.

ADVANCED DIRECTORS CRAFT - Students will be guided from pre-production through a final screening of their Final Film.  Course will include weekly lectures and planned mentoring for the Final Film.  Each students will complete a Final Film upon completion of Film Track.

SCREENWRITING - Teaches the formal and artistic elements of writing a screenplay. Students will develop their own screenwriting weekly, while analyzing existing screenplays both on screen and on the page.  The class will guide the students towards a Final Film script to be shot in the second term of Film Track.  (*PLEASE NOTE: Final Cut screenwriting software will be provided to each student.)

CINEMATOGRAPHY - Learn the technical craft of using the camera, as well as lighting for all environments.  The class will engage in weekly, critiqued Production Cinematography Exercises under the mentorship of the instructor, with an added emphasis on working both with and on a crew.   This hands-on camera-craft class will also cover historic and philosophical views on the art of cinematography.

SOUND - Class will cover the basic and more advanced components of audio recording on set; in addition to addressing all post-production sound elements, such as mixing, editing, and sound design.  Students will engage in weekly Production Sound Exercises geared towards a finer understanding of sound craft.

EDITING/EDITING LAB - Both a lecture on editing craft as well as structured window in which to edit material under the mentorship of the editing instructor.  The class will cover the basic, technical components of editing on Final Cut software (provided), as well the philosophical considerations for editing towards a desired effect.  The Editing Lab will be conducted for both semesters of Film Track.

ACTOR/DIRECTOR FILM LAB - A master class in which students will explore the frank relationship, varied skill-set and unique connection between film-directing and acting-for-camera. Students will enroll in the class as either “director” or “actor” and engage in a candid study of how the two crafts work in tandem. The class will further expand the definitions of director/actor collaboration, intro filmmaking, screen-direction, film-acting technique and the symbiosis of all film elements.  This class will be open to Strasberg Institute Acting Students as well.
